How to film your video

A short guide — everything you need, nothing you don't.

You don't need a good camera or any experience. We are listening to what you say and how you say it. A video filmed on a phone is exactly what we want — these tips just help make sure we can see and hear you clearly.

The basics

Keep it to 2–3 minutes. Say who you are and where you're from, then answer the question. Shorter and clear beats long and rambling.
Sound matters most. Film somewhere quiet, out of the wind, with no traffic, music or people talking in the background. Hold the phone about an arm's length away so your voice is picked up well.
Use the best quality your phone has. If your phone has a video quality setting, choose the highest one. If not, don't worry — just film normally.
Hold the phone sideways. Film in landscape (horizontal), not upright. Rest the phone on something steady or prop it up so it doesn't shake.
Face the light. Have daylight or a lamp in front of you, lighting your face — not behind you. Avoid filming with a bright window at your back.
Look at the camera. Speak to the lens as if you're talking to a person. It's fine to glance at notes, but try not to read the whole time.
Be yourself. Speak in English or French, in your own words. You don't need formal language — honesty and clarity are what stand out.

Filming other people

Only film people who have agreed to appear. Do not include children unless a parent or guardian has clearly agreed. Be careful not to film anything that could put you or others at risk.

How to send it

Complete the online form, then send your video via WeTransfer to the address on the form — or paste a link to your video (YouTube, Google Drive or similar) in the form. If your video is too large to send, most phones let you reduce the size when sharing, or you can send it over Wi-Fi to avoid using your data.

Before you send — quick check

  • Can you hear my voice clearly, with no background noise?
  • Is the phone sideways (landscape) and steady?
  • Is my face lit from the front?
  • Is it between 2 and 3 minutes?
  • Did I say who I am, where I'm from, and answer the question?
  • Has everyone in the video agreed to appear?
